Following in the footsteps of Milan, Paris and London, Toronto is the latest city to inaugurate a men’s fashion week of its own. By doing so, the city which is known for drawing a global audience to its annual Toronto International Film Festival, becomes the eighth city in the world to host a fashion week entirely dedicated to menswear.
When it comes to fashion heavyweights such as Milan, the menswear-only event is celebrated for the sartorial precision spotted on the runways. Nevertheless, it is often criticized for offering a platform solely to the established set in fashion. Toronto’s men’s fashion week – which is widely referred to with the acronym TOM* – boasted the opposite. Though Canadian menswear veteran Christopher Bates was part of the three-day show schedule, it was the eclectic mix of emerging young designers, which set the tone during the city its first men’s week.
